How do I add transitions between my images and videos?

WeVideo Support -

Transitions basics

Usually in a video, clips are displayed one after the other. Transitions, when used properly, can help the story move from one clip to the next by connecting them with a subtle animation.

In WeVideo transitions are automatically added between clips in storyboard mode as part of the default theme (read more below).

In timeline mode you can add transitions manually, delete transitions or customize them even more. In order for these changes to be preserved you must complete your video in timeline mode (do not switch back to storyboard mode).

To create the effect, transitions remove approximately 1 second from the edges of the clips. These seconds are removed from the trimmed content of your videos. This means the frames you do not see and have previously trimmed down of cut. If the clips have not been trimmed then the transition will be created by removing some frames from the visible content. This may cause some movement in the timing of the clips.

Notes:

  • It is not suggested to use transitions on very short images or videos.
  • Transition durations and can be expanded or trimmed by clicking on the transition after placing it.

Transitions in Storyboard mode

Locate the transition icon between the clips in the timeline. This icon appears automatically when a theme that includes transitions is applied. If there is no icon your clip is either too short or the theme does not have a transition.

To replace the transition, click on the icon to access the Transitions menu.

In this menu you can browse and preview through several transition choices. You can apply the transition to the specific location you clicked on or you can apply it to all of the current transitions on your storyboard.

Transitions in Timeline mode

Timeline mode does not add automatic transitions with the exception of applying a new theme. To add a new transitions, click on the Transitions tab. This is the 3rd tab in Timeline mode.

Here you can preview each transition by hovering your mouse over it and clicking Play.

To apply a transition, drag it to the edge of a clip in the track. Transitions can be added between connected clips and on the edges of the clips.

As a guide to help you place transitions, you'll notice that an outline will appear around the transitions. Red means that the transition cannot be added to the clip, green/yellow means that it can be added.

You can extend or reduce transitions by clicking on the transition icon after placing it. This takes you to the transition menu that allows you to apply custom duration to the transition based on the clips the transition is part of.

You can not place a stand alone transition in the timeline.
